After reading the Time's article "Snooping Bosses" I have a few thoughts about it's content.
I do agree that when a worker is using a company phone and/or company computer the employer is well in his rights to monitor those for inappropriate behavior. Of course you don't want your employees to watch porn or spread sensitive information about the company online or to other companies. However when you extend that lack of privacy to the employees homes, I think that's the beginning of something very scary.
Every person should be allowed to have a personal life, and as long as that doesn't effect their work, then why does the boss need to know what you think of him or the job it self? I mean I've had jobs where I don't really agree with the management, like how the run things or just their personality. But does that mean I will not perform to the best of my ability? In my case, no. But if one employes feelings about his boss effect his work, then of course that person should be confronted with his poor performance.
So in my opinion, if the companies feel the need to snoop around, by all means do so, but only at the company itself and not the employees home.
Hi pedaN.
SvaraRaderaI agree with you on several points in your text. If I was the boss I wouln't want my employees to surf porn under working hours, talk bad behind my back or about someone on the workforce. It looks really bad and if the content could hurt the company I would like to know who is hurting ous.
Of course people will always have different opinions, but if the person want to talk about the matter they don don't like they can take it up with their bosses or someone that is above their rank in the company. Their thoughts can actually be good that brings the compnay forward. And I belive that they should not snoop into the employees that actually take their job seriously or preform well.
From my point of view, the most important thing you talked about, is when the company start snooping around in the employees homes. It truly is the begining to something scary! And I think their's a thin line between snooping and snooping, by that I mean reading mail and a obsessive controlling behavior.
As you can see I'm kind of torn between if it's ok to snoop or not.
Best regards David.
Hi David
SvaraRaderaI do agree with what you have written in this blog entry, if not to the fullest but to a certain limit. I also feel that it is a employers right to "snoop" on his employees to a certain extent if he or she has a feeling that the emoployee is doing things that they are not supposed to do during their work hours.
I also agree regarding the snooping on employees on their free time, however, I do not think that this is such a huge issue, yet, and I certainly doesn't hope that it will be in the future either.
You can obviously tell that I do feel that it is in they employers full right to snoop, to a limit. All they have to do is to use some common sense.
